The W950i has the same physical design (form factor) as the Sony Ericsson M600i. The M600i better for business users who text a lot - it has a dual-function QWERTY keyboard.

Key benifits incluce its music player, FM radio, earphones and large phone memory. There's no hardware QERTY keyboard, camera or memory card slot on the W950i.

The keypad has a flat keyplay. There's a small raised circular dot in the middle of each key to give the user some tactile feedback. The numbers and letter have a white back lighting.

It's not a touch pad, so you do feel the keys clicking down. Some, perhaps many people won't like the keypad. It has a 12 key alphanumeric keypad with a orange - bordered Walkman key and a cancel key. The keypad has 2 modes - phone mode and a Walkman mode.

When in Walkman mode, 3 symbols light up at the top of the keypad showing how the top three keys of the keypad are used. These keys act as previous, play / stop and next keys. Coming to the Web browsing, the W950i's is a 2.6 - inch 240 x 320 pixel colour screen, 3G Internet access and the Opera Web browser's landscape view mode offer a fantastic browsing experience.

Opera 8 Mobile zoom feature is good for people who have trouble reading small text. Zoom ratios of 20% to 200% are available. Other useful Opera 8 features include bookmarks, save page, pop-up blocker, page information, secure site support, password and download managers.

Lots of good features - assign a mood to a track, shuffle the songs, create a playlist, equalizer, rate the track, forward or rewind within a track (use the 1 and 3 keys or drag your finger/stylus along the track progress bar).

You can sort tracks by title, file size, play count, rating, view tracks by mood, artists, albums, playlists and recordings.

The W950i is an excellent music player phone with a few interface quirks. The keypad is OK for typing numbers, not good for texting - you've got to be precise in your key presses - aim for the raised dimple on each key.

Palm's new Treo 700p may look like older Treos, but it is loaded with internal improvements that Treo fans have been waiting for. The 700p, available in two versions,adds high-speed EV-DO networking, a better camera, and updated software to our Editors' Choice Palm Treo 650. That's enough to keep Palm in the lead for the best-balanced, easiest-to-use smartphone in the USA.
The Treo 700p looks just like its Windows Mobile cousin, the Treo 700w, which in turn looks almost exactly like the familiar and much-loved Treo 650. The main difference between the 650 and the 700p is the keyboard. The 700p's keys are squarer, making them a hair more susceptible to mistyping. The five-way rocker above the keyboard is bigger, and the activity keys near the rocker have been juggled around a bit; the Menu button has been moved down to replace the right Shift key, and the power/hang-up button and phone pick-up button are now at the top of the button stack. The 700p's sharp, 320-by-320 color screen is identical to the 650's (and much higher-res than the 700w's). At 4.4 by 2.3 by 0.9 inches and 6.4 ounces, all three phones could easily be mistaken for each other.

The advances in the Treo 700p are in software. It takes the 700w's advantages—fast EV-DO networking and a 1.3-megapixel camera—and marries them to the latest in easy-to-use Palm OS software. Yes, the Palm OS is getting old; most notably, it doesn't support multitasking, which is annoying when you're downloading e-mail and want to do something else. But it's still tremendously responsive and requires relatively few keypresses or stylus taps to do what you want.

The 700p is also the first smartphone to access Sprint TV streaming video service. The live TV channels look blocky on the 700p's high-res screen; they're transmitted in 176-by-132, and the 700p is 320-by-320. But they stream, and they work. Handmark's On Demand information service also comes with the Treo, delivering maps, weather, movie times, and news headlines.

Because DocumentsToGo is burned into ROM, the 700p has 60MB of memory available. That's not much in the Microsoft Windows world, but it's plenty for smaller Palm apps. You can add an SD card for more storage. The 700p supports the FAT32 file system, so it should work with current SD cards up to 4GB, but not with next-generation SD cards that use the SDHC standrad.
Although the Treo syncs easily with both Macs (with iSync or Palm Desktop) and PCs (with Palm Desktop or Microsoft Outlook), Mac users don't get the ultimate prize—the ability to use the Treo as a USB modem on Sprint's EV-DO network. With it hooked up to a PC using Sprint's Connection Manager, I got excellent speeds of 900 to 1,100 Kbps. That's awesome. But when I connected to a Mac using Bluetooth, speeds slowed down to about 200 to 300 Kbps. The problem is the Treo's Bluetooth 1.2 stack, which is just too slow to handle the full speed of EV-DO.

You won't get that full speed in Palm's Blazer browser, either. Blazer's not-so-fast rendering engine kept effective speeds on bandwidth-test Web sites down to about 200 Kbps. But the device as a whole feels very responsive, and it's fast enough to play music or stream video. (Streaming media appears in a customized version of Kinoma's media player, which can handle MP3 , WMA , WMV , and MPEG4 streams.) In both processor and video benchmarking tests, the 700p came out slightly faster than both the Treo 650 and the Palm TX, the Editors' Choice standalone PDA.

The 700p has plenty of messaging options. The simple VersaMail POP3 /IMAP mail client now syncs e-mail and contacts with Microsoft Exchange 2003 servers, remembers recently used addresses, and hooks into DocumentsToGo for attachment reading. There are also hooks on board for Good's GoodLink corporate e-mail system and Sprint's own Business Connection push e-mail. The separate SMS / MMS app now has a threaded, conversation-based view, where messages from the same address are grouped together.

Also on board are a file manager, the popular Bejeweled game, and a basic version of the Pocket Tunes MP3 player, which you can upgrade for $24.95 to support WMA files, music purchased from Microsoft-compatible stores, and streaming radio stations. Palm also includes the Avvenu remote-file-access service (check PCMag.com soon for our review of Avvenu).

As a phone, the Treo 700p is fine but not great. Sound through the earpiece in a noisy location was a little wobbly, and transmissions were clear but a bit tinny. There's no in-ear voice feedback or noise cancellation. The Treo paired well with my Plantronics Bluetooth headset (though I've heard Treos have some trouble with Motorola headsets), and the speakerphone is loud and powerful. Battery life is its one standout strength: The beefy battery gives it 5 hours 16 minutes of talk time. That's especially impressive considering that the screen no longer completely turns off when you're in a call. A new "ignore with text" feature lets you send a quick SMS to someone calling you if, for example, you're in a meeting. And that the phone vibrates when you hit its mute switch is a nice touch.

Motorola V325

Excellent navigation software sets the handsome Motorola V325 apart from the general pack of Verizon voice phones. Though it lacks features that power users will demand, such as Bluetooth , it's an attractive, good-sounding phone that will help you get around with its GPS functions. Of course, you'll pay extra for that feature, so make sure you really need it.

The V325 is a solid, well-designed flip phone. The velvety-black, soft-touch plastic and grooved metal construction give the handset a classy, businesslike look-and-feel. The keys inside are flat but large, and the 176-by-220 screen, although not huge, is quite bright. A two-line text display on the outside shows time (but not date), battery, and Caller ID information, just like the displays on the Motorola V557 and V330. When the V325 receives a call, lights on the outside of the flip pulse seductively.

The VGA camera on the outside has no flash, but it does have a self-portrait mirror. (The self-portrait mirror is the little mirror next to the camera on a cameraphone that lets you take pictures of yourself. It's on a lot of models that don't have color external screens. If you have a color external screen, you can use it as a viewfinder; if there's no viewfinder on the outside of the flip, the mirror helps you position yourself.) Side buttons control the volume, speakerphone, and voice recorder.

Reception and call quality through the earpiece and speakerphone are both fine, though the lack of Bluetooth or voice dialing in such a car-focused phone hurts. Battery life, at 3 hours 50 minutes of continuous talk time, is in the midrange for Verizon phones.

The driving-directions service is better than Sprint Nextel's competing TeleNav software (as seen on the Nextel i605), with clear, colorful on-screen maps and loudly shouted directions.

Maps look good, and they load within a few seconds. Like Sprint's service, VZ Navigator uses a two-step process for finding its location. First it uses cell-tower triangulation to get a quick but less accurate fix on your location. Then it gets a slower but more accurate fix via a satellite GPS. I found the triangulation to be quite good even in Manhattan.

You get multiple routing choices, including the fastest, the shortest, car, bicycle, and truck options, as well as the option to avoid highways, tolls, and HOV (high-occupancy vehicle) lanes. The "avoid toll roads" option didn't seem to avoid toll bridges and tunnels, and the "on foot" option sent me on some unfortunately roundabout routes. Still, basic driving directions were accurate, and VZ Navigator even corrected us when we went off route. A "local search" function lets you find points of interest near you, including ATMs, restaurants, gas stations, movie theaters, and anything that pops up in a Yellow Pages search, such as the Ziff-Davis offices.

The service costs $9.99 per month or $2.99 per day. We just wish the phone had Bluetooth, so it could integrate better into an automotive setup. Right now, VZ Navigator is Verizon's only GPS-enabled app; though Verizon also sells MapQuest Mobile and Vindigo city guides, these guides don't use GPS.

Otherwise, the V325's functions are basic. The VGA camera isn't very good, taking photos that manage to be dim and overexposed in the same shot. There is no video recording or playback option. To retrieve your photos, you must e-mail them to yourself using Verizon's picture messaging service. You can play MP3 ringtones, but only if you buy them from Verizon. Gaming was a little annoying because there's no way to mute the keypad sounds, though that's not a rare problem. The 33.6MB of storage has plenty of room for photos, ringtones, and games. There's no high-speed networking.

VZ Navigator makes the V325 a unique product in Verizon's lineup. But if you don't need the driving directions, this is an expensive phone for what you get. Other phones in its price range, such as the Motorola E815 and LG VX8100, have megapixel cameras and Bluetooth. Phones with similar feature sets to the V325 but without GPS navigation, such as the LG VX5200 , are generally cheaper. Pick up the V325 to help you get around, but turn to one of those other models if you're looking for a more complete or more affordable phone.

Samsung SCH-A950

Samsung's SCH-A950 brings a jaunty jog-dial navigator to Verizon's V Cast downloadable music service and has plenty of power for a Verizon phone. If you're looking to play Windows Media format songs on your phone, it'll be tough to choose between this model and the LG VX8100, though we still prefer the Motorola E815 as our overall favorite Verizon model.

The SCH-A950 is a slightly bulky 4-ounce flip phone, but as long as you like its tomato-red color, it's still attractive. When it's flipped closed, there's a color screen on the outside that doubles as a camera viewfinder, a large jog wheel with music-control buttons under it, and two oval-shaped stereo speakers on either side at the top. On the sides of the phone, you'll find volume buttons, a TransFlash memory card slot, and a camera button. Flip the phone open to find a bright, medium-sized, 176-by-220 screen and a keypad of very close-set buttons, including a dedicated speakerphone key.

The A950 connects calls as well as the competing LG VX8100 does, though it isn't quite up to the Motorola E815's reception standards. The earpiece and especially the speakerphone (which works with the flip open or closed) are unusually loud and clear. As on most Verizon phones, the Bluetooth functionality is crippled; it works with headsets, but not for dial-up networking or file transfer. Our A950 worked well with both Logitech and Plantronics headsets. It uses VoiceSignal's excellent voice-dialing technology, which requires no training.

One problem you should be aware of: Our first A950 had more audio dropouts than we found acceptable. Verizon sent us a second one which didn't have that problem, so we're not downgrading the phone's rating. If your A950's audio drops out more than you'd like, Verizon lets you exchange the phone, no questions asked, within the first 15 days of usage.

The A950's flagship feature is Verizon's V Cast Music store, where you can either download songs for $1.99 each over the phone or sync your music from a PC with Windows Media Player 10 using a $29.99 add-on kit. The phone doesn't natively support MP3 files—the kit converts all your music to WMA format when it transfers the songs to the phone. The phone's stereo speakers play music at pretty high volume, and you can listen to music through a wired headset, but using a Bluetooth headset. You also can't assign your own music as ringtones, a typical Verizon move.

The on-phone V Cast interface is almost painfully sluggish, but V Cast Music is still the most elegant and complete music-phone solution available today. You can use the buttons on the outside of the phone's flip to play phone-created playlists. Unfortunately, the jog dial is tragically underused; its only functions are to scroll through a set of playlists and to fast-forward or rewind a song while paused. We would have loved to see a jog-dial interface that would have let us manipulate more of the phone's functions with the flip closed.

The SCH-A950's 1.3-megapixel camera takes very sharp, if slightly dim, indoor photos and very sharp, if slightly overexposed, outdoor shots. It's better than the VX8100's camera. The camcorder mode takes the usual videos you see on most phones, at 176-by-144 and 15 frames per second, and you can save photos and videos to the TransFlash card for easy transfer to your PC.

We downloaded Need For Speed Most Wanted, a 3D game, and it played with aplomb, as did TV news clips from the V Cast Video service. For serious gaming, however, you may want to check out the VX8100 because of its better-spaced keys.

The Motorola E815 and Motorola RAZR V3c are still our favorite Verizon phones, largely because of their excellent reception and voice quality. They also play MP3s, although they don't sync with Verizon's music store. If you're looking for a V Cast Music phone, it makes sense to compare the A950 with the very similar LG VX8100. The phones are about the same size, with similar stereo speakers and screens. The VX8100 uses the more convenient miniSD memory-card format and has a better-spaced keypad. Verizon offers a modem plan for the VX8100 that lets you use the phone to connect your laptop to their high-speed EV-DO service. On the other hand, the A950 has better battery life and a better camera than the VX8100.

Helio Kickflip

An elegant white rectangle, the Helio Kickflip ($250 list) could be a style icon on the order of the RAZR. Unfortunately, hideously buggy software forces me to warn you away from this phone, at least during May and June of 2006. Helio says it's fixing the software soon. When it does, I will revisit this review.

The software bugs are unfortunate, because this phone sure is pretty. It's a little heavy, at 4.5 ounces and 3.9 by 2 by 1 inches, but the hinge snaps open automatically with a firm touch, and it's tremendous fun to feel the kick of the screen flying into place. The number buttons are tight but big enough, the dedicated music and camera buttons on the outside work well, and the screen is gorgeous. If all you want to do is watch the logo flip up and down while swinging the snappy hinge back and forth, go ahead, buy one.

Unfortunately, the Kickflip's bugs affect even basic calling functions. During outgoing calls there's an unacceptable hiss in the earpiece, and the battery runs down after less than 3 hours of talk time. That's not good.

The phone has a 2-megapixel camera, but there's no way to get the photos out of it because it saves them in a bizarre, nonstandardized format, even when you transfer them to a microSD memory card. If you try to send them to yourself, they shrink down to 640-by-480. The phone also has a music/video player, but I could never get the phone to play MP3s off a memory card, though I could get it to crash a lot while trying to do so.

There were other, smaller bugs that were pretty annoying. If you're in an application that uses the phone's soft keys (such as the video player), and you flip the phone closed, the app keeps running with the soft key labels pointing to no buttons you can possibly press on the closed phone. Helio's HOT application, which brings news headlines to the phone's home screen, disables the phone's menu button, making it useless. To cap it all, the phone gets uncomfortably warm when left plugged in.

It seems to me the 320-by-240 screen is too good for Helio's video content. It is a big, bright display, but the video looks bad. A downloaded music video looked almost impressionistically blocky. The phone has TV-video out, which I couldn't test as my model didn't come with the right cable—and anyway, both the 176-by-144 videos taken with the phone's camera and the blocky music video I downloaded would look even more awful on a TV.

Helio plans to update the Kickflip's software in June to improve sound quality, battery life, and overall stability and functionality, though Helio is unwisely selling it now. Right now, anyone with half an ounce of sense should buy the Hero; if they want to try the Helio experience, and stay away from the buggy Kickflip.

Whassup?: With its purchase of hardcore gamer and industry news wires GamerFeed and GameDaily, game download network Gigex re-launches itself as GameDaily.com. The site now aggregates all of Gigex's pieces, a recently launched consumer editorial site of reviews, previews, et. al., the GameDaily feed of company announcements, and demo/trailer/patch downloads.

So What?: GameDaily almost gets it right by offering a cleaner, quicker presentation than the overstuffed big boys of game content. The tight, short drive-by reviews from the recently installed editorial staff are the best feature here. Still lacking is tighter integration of the consumer editorial, industry news and downloads areas, which lack a consistent navigational structure across the pieces.

Whassup?: Children are now spending more time with video games than TV, according to Michigan State University research with 1,000 5th, 8th, 11th graders and college students. The 8th graders are the sweet spot of game activity, with boys playing 23 hours a week and girls playing 12 hours. Collegeage boys (16 hours) and 11th grade girls (6 hours) are the least frequent gamers for their genders. Competition with peers and against themselves are the core motivations to game, the research finds, and as the gamers age they prefer more social interaction.

So What?: Researchers say that while boys are clocking in twice as many game hours as girls, the gaming gender gap clearly is closing with this generation, and educators may even want to encourage this trend. Gaming is an important way that kids become acquainted and comfortable with the technology that will be so important to their adult careers, MSU professor Bradley Greenberg says. McNealy projects that the recent Xbox price cut will help the platform sell about 275,000 units vs. 200,000 PS2s for April, the first time any competitor will have outsold Sony's war horse. After Sony surprised every one recently in announcing that PS2 sales could dip by 30% this year, many financial analysts suggested that unless Sony cuts console pricing game sales will suffer this year.

So What?: Without a compelling new title soon, Xbox sales will back off as quickly as GameCube sales did. Clearly Sony is working hard to extend the usual price drop cycle for its own machine, as they also reassured publishers and the market recently the PS2 would still be relevant until 2010. All of which begs the question of how confident Sony is about hitting its timetable and/or a good price point for its enormously complex, still unseen PS3.

AT&T, Nokia Launch New N75 Smartphone

AT&T and Nokia said today that they're officially putting the Nokia N75, AT&T's first 3G Nokia phone, on sale tomorrow for $199.99, with a two-year contract and $50 mail-in rebate.

To call the N75 long-awaited would be an understatement. It was first announced last September , scheduled for a release in the "fourth quarter of 2006" as the top-tier phone in Cingular's new music initiative. Sadly, though, it's been hiding in Cingular's labs ever since.

The N75 is not only the first Nokia phone on Cingular's 3G UMTS network, it's also the first 3G smart phone available in the US to use the Symbian operating system, and the first Symbian flip phone available through a major carrier. Symbian, while tremendously popular abroad, has never caught on in the US because it's closely tied to Nokia, which has had trouble getting high-end phones to US carriers. That's frustrating because literally thousands of Symbian applications are available through online stores like Handango.

The N75 is a chunky flip phone with a big, color external screen and an utterly gorgeous, bright, glossy 320-by-240 internal screen. The keys are large and easy to press, and there's a 2MP camera on the back. The phone syncs with Windows Media Player, playing both purchased and subscribed content, and also plays MP3 and AAC files in its onboard music player, through wired or wireless headphones.

Since it's also a smartphone running Symbian Series 60 version 3, the N75 has PDF and Microsoft Office readers built in, plus IM and e-mail applications, and an excellent Web browser. Other onboard applications include RealPlayer, a Flash player, and an FM radio.

As a UMTS phone, the N75 will be able to download data from the Internet at speeds up to 384 kbps/sec and won't cause the dreaded "GSM buzz" in nearby speakers, but will get much shorter battery life than older GSM phones.

AvantGo for BlackBerry (beta)

AvantGo has been around for quite some time, dating back to early Palm PDA handhelds when it was nothing but an off-line Web browser. Today it has a lot more features, with a robust selection of thousands of custom "channels" to choose from. It's a nifty way to browse the Web on the go, despite some intrusive ad placement.

Available on all major smartphone platforms, AvantGo comes in versions for Palm OS, Windows Mobile, Symbian UIQ, and Symbian S60. For this review I decided to give the new beta AvantGo for BlackBerry client a whirl. I tested it on a Sprint BlackBerry 8703e, arguably the best of the older-school BlackBerry devices. It has a 320- by 240-pixel screen and high-speed EV-DO data access, making it perfect to test out AvantGo's custom browsing features. Unfortunately, the "high speed" part never really came into play.

What makes AvantGo unique is its ability to download big gulps of content and then read it even in places when you don't have a cell-phone signal such as airplanes, subways, or department-store basements. Once you have a signal again, click the Synchronization button and AvantGo will go grab a batch of new stories from your channel list.

To download the beta, head over to m.avantgo.com from your BlackBerry's browser. Be warned, though: The installation process is a bit irritating, as it includes an application install and a multiple-question survey that won't let you skip any answers. These surveys aren't fun on a desktop browser to begin with, so imagine the joy you'll experience choosing boxes and entering answers on your BlackBerry. Fortunately, there aren't that many questions to field.

After you complete the sign-up process, start AvantGo by choosing its icon from the BlackBerry's main menu. AvantGo starts you off with six channels. When I clicked on "The New York Times" and "Latest News," I saw a list of seven stories that included the title, author, and a three- or four-line deck describing each one. I could then click on each one and read the entire story. Other options included "Business News" and "Technology News," but that was it for the choices. The Reuters channel had a lot more content to choose from, and it also lets you add additional sections from within the channel. Later I found you could do the same thing with the New York Times channel, but you had to accomplish this via the Browse Channels feature (see below).

I was less than pleased with the huge ads plastered throughout the application, such as on the channel-selection screen, on many of the channel screens, and in the stories themselves. They're much larger than the ads on most mobile WAP pages.

To add new channels, you select the Settings tab (which shows a wrench icon) at the top of the screen. This lets you browse AvantGo channels, remove others from your current list, and check out some of AvantGo's recommendations. Browsing is fun, as information is broken up into large categories, each with many choices. I added a large group of new channels, though before I could see them, I had to select Synchronize from the menu. The problem is that this task took a surprisingly long time, about eight minutes—an eternity in the mobile world, especially over EV-DO.

Besides the provided news channels, AvantGo also syncs up with your travel itineraries from airlines and gives you access to travel guides, city guides, and local weather and maps. It also has a mobile RSS reader, a nice plus. You can choose from five color themes, though for some reason you have to perform another full synchronization before you can see the changes.

Much of this sounds like what Handmark offers with Pocket Express. Pocket Express costs money ($6.95 to $9.95 per month), whereas AvantGo is free. But Handmark pulls information together in a neater, more usable format than AvantGo. AvantGo's spotty channel selection also troubled me. The application's Web site advertises thousands of channels to choose from, but that must apply to the other versions, because the BlackBerry version seemed to have only a few hundred.

You can also get much of the same content just by surfing to mobile WAP sites using the BlackBerry's built-in Web browser. Of course, the latter method is not as simple, as you have to learn all the mobile URLs for the sites you want to read, and each one has a different design (just like the real Web). AvantGo condenses all the content and puts it in the same interface. That alone has an undeniable appeal, given the rudimentary (or non-working) state of many of the WAP sites out there.

PalmSource's Linux Move: Good News and Bad News

PalmSource Inc. looks to have the open-source community in its corner as it comes out swinging at established contenders for a share of the growing mobile handset market. But analysts were unclear on how PalmSource's Linux move will shake out for the operating system and for its customers, including sibling palmOne Inc.

PalmSource on Wednesday said it had acquired China MobileSoft Ltd., a developer of mobile phone software based in Nanjing, China. In addition to a variety of applications for smart phones, the company offers mLinux, a compact version of Linux for smart phones, and mFone, a software platform for less-expensive phones.

The company hopes to attract phone vendors with an established mobile applications platform, new media frameworks and, of course, its tested interface. It now can leverage the distributed support for chip sets and drivers available from the open-source community.

Customers leaning toward Linux "will get the help they need with applications and layers, and still get all the community aspects that Linux brings to bear," he said.

According to Dunphy, the company will migrate its Cobalt 6.1 APIs to the Palm OS for Linux, while continuing support for Cobalt 6.0 and Palm OS 5, or Garnet. While keeping its upper-level application frameworks proprietary, such as those for multimedia and security, the foundation work will be released under an "appropriate open-source license," he said.

However, analysts weren't altogether upbeat on PalmSource's plan to use a Linux-based OS for Palm devices. The move has implications for the Palm brand, for developers and for end-users.

"As for PalmSource, it's a move they had to make. OS shipments have been declining steadily, and there has been little interest in Palm OS Cobalt," said Todd Kort, principal analyst at Gartner Inc., of Stamford, Conn.

ut a number of Cobalt-based smart phones are in the process of entering the market, David Limp, senior vice president of corporate and business development at PalmSource, told eWEEK.com. He said some of the forthcoming models will be based on Cobalt 6.0, which shipped to licensees at the end of last year.

"Porting Palm applications to Linux will take at least a year, and in the transition period, both palmOne and PalmSource are likely to experience some difficulties in the market—whether they want to continue to support the other platforms as they have before," Gartner's Kort said.

"They will still have to maintain efforts with the Garnet and Cobalt OSes, but that means juggling more balls, and it's more likely that something will be dropped."

Some analyst reports point to gains by Microsoft in the mobile market. Contributing editor Guy Kewney recently took a close look at the progress of Microsoft, Palm and Symbian in the fight over the mobile operating system. here.

In addition, PalmSource might face more difficulties using Linux than expected, Kort said. While the perception of the open-source platform is that it's a free-spirited being that can be used by anyone with the desire, he warned that that is not necessarily the case.

"The problem with Linux is that it has no master. Every vendor has their own version of Linux. It's a myth that it [Linux] runs everywhere," he said. "Given that [PalmSoft's new partner] China MobileSoft is a small company, it's going to take a lot of resources to promote that as a major flavor of Linux."

Kort also chided the software company's announcement for its affect on palmOne. "It's very bad for PalmOne because it's in the middle of the Christmas selling season, and its sister company has thrown lots of fear and uncertainty into the market."

On the other hand, analyst Carl Zetie with Cambridge, Mass.-based Forrester Research Inc. took a more positive stance on the switchover. He said the Linux kernel will allow PalmSource and its OEM customers to create high-end devices and also to find entry into the lower-end, high-volume part of the market, such as ordinary cell phones.

"It's also good news for palmOne and their relationship with PalmSource," Zetie said. "Some people have been speculating for a long time that PalmOne would abandon Palm OS and PalmSource for Linux—that would have been disastrous. Now we can stop worrying about that."

Kort agreed that the new move means PalmSource has the potential to hit it big in the wider mobile phone sector.
